ABOUT ME
Today my 2 year old drew a flower. Okay so it was more like a scribble, but it looked like a flower. He held the crayon full-fisted, like it was a gear shift, as it flew off of the paper and back in in one fell swoop. The look on his face was pure joy. He couldn't care less if his design is good or if he chose the right color crayon, he just knows that his giant scribble half on the paper, half on my dining room table made a mark, and to him that’s exciting. In a way, that is what design means to me, making your mark on something and having fun doing it.
I, too, was introduced to the world of creativity at a young age when I refused to let my mom pick out my outfits for school. Sure it meant me wearing cowboy boots and a skullcap on the first day of kindergarten in the 90 degree heat, but all that mattered to me was that I chose it and I thought it looked great. In high school I began the search for something a little more involved creatively then mismatching my socks. When forced to take an art class for credit, I immediately knew that art, in whatever form I could find, was it for me.
I later graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Design & Graphic Communication and eventually moved to San Francisco to wander the maze of the dotcom era of 2000. Building my graphic skills as I went, I landed at Pottery Barn and have been doing layout and production design on their catalog, along with various creative marketing materials for the last 10 years. Pottery Barn has given me the opportunity to blend three of my passions into one career - layout, type design and pretty pictures.
Recently as life has gotten crazier and I find myself surrounded by two sets of little boy feet (and I mean surrounded all the time), I have decided to use all of my past experience, from 9th grade art class and college design lectures to working with all of the amazing designers at Pottery Barn, to take the next step as a designer and focus on freelancing. Who knows where this path will take me, but no matter where I am, I am quick to remind myself why I do what I do. At the end of the day, I really just want to be scribbling madly like my son on a piece of paper and maybe a little bit on the table too.
